Gateshead, U.K., and Atlanta, Georgie (July 16, 2025)—North East Mayor Kim McGuinness officially commissioned Turntide Technologies’ new energy storage and battery technology production area at the company’s engineering campus and global headquarters in Gateshead, U.K.

Turntide Technologies (Turntide), which designs and manufactures cutting-edge electric motors, power electronics, energy storage, and thermal management systems, serves global markets and industries, including off-highway vehicles and equipment, premium automotive, commercial vehicles, rail, marine, and light vehicles.

Mayor McGuinness tours the manufacturing facility with CEO Steve Hornyak and VP of Product George Paterson.

As part of its ongoing development, Turntide has integrated its three North East sites to create a consolidated engineering campus in Gateshead, supported by additional engineering and storage capacity at its Sunderland and Cramlington sites.

The move streamlines operations, fosters greater collaboration, and positions North East England as the company’s global hub engineering innovation for electrification.

The facility enhances Turntide’s ability to serve growing demand across multiple transportation and industrial sectors, positioning the company and the North East at the forefront of global electrification efforts.

The commissioning of the new facility marks another major milestone for Turntide’s growing presence in North East England, where it has continued to expand since arriving in 2021 following the acquisition of three regionally based businesses with deep expertise in electric motors, inverters, and battery technology.

The company’s technology is already being deployed in sectors such as construction and agricultural machinery, materials handling, and urban passenger transport, as well as in rail, where Turntide is the preferred supplier to Hitachi Rail for its intercity battery train program.

The technology designed and manufactured in Gateshead helps drive global efforts to decarbonize transport systems and deliver more efficient, accessible, and sustainable mobility solutions.

Steve Hornyak, CEO of Turntide Technologies, said, “We are honored to welcome the Mayor to officially commission this important and expanded production facility. This campus forms the core of Turntide’s global electrification operations and reinforces our commitment to supporting the decarbonization of anything that moves.

“North East England has an extraordinary legacy of innovation in electrification, and we are proud to be part of that continuing story. The region offers world-class engineering talent, a highly skilled workforce, and a dynamic Combined Authority and Mayor, which are creating an environment where businesses like Turntide can thrive, grow and serve global markets. We are excited about the opportunities in this region, and we are fully committed to playing our part in its future success.”

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness said, “The North East will be the home of the green energy revolution, and our work with companies like Turntide Technologies, who are expanding their factory, shows we are making that happen right here and now.

“It’s fantastic they’re partnering with Hitachi in Newton Aycliffe, who we have also worked hard with to protect jobs and create new opportunities. This partnership means batteries created in Gateshead will power trains built in Country Durham – that’s a reflection of the talented workforce in our region.

Mayor McGuinness also met two interns working with the team in Gateshead.

“While we have a proud history as an industrial powerhouse, the North East is once again leading the way with an innovative manufacturing sector.”
