Turntide Technologies (Turntide), a leader in best-in-class electric motors, power electronics and energy storage, has been shortlisted in the Product Innovation of the Year category at Insider Media’s Made in the North East Awards 2026.

The shortlists were determined following an in-depth judging process by a panel of independent manufacturing experts. Winners will be announced at a gala dinner at the Hilton Newcastle Gateshead on March 26, 2026, with regional winners progressing to the national Made in the UK Awards.

Turntide has been recognized for its recently launched Axial Flux Electric Drive Unit (EDU), a configurable, fully validated propulsion platform designed to dramatically reduce development time for manufacturers transitioning to electric and hybrid systems.

The integrated EDU platform combines motor, inverter and drivetrain technologies into a single platform, removing the need for lengthy, component-level validation and enabling original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to accelerate product development while reducing cost and risk.

The system is designed for a wide range of applications including construction equipment, commercial vehicles, off-highway machinery, automotive and high-performance powersports.

Steve Hornyak, CEO of Turntide Technologies, said, “Being shortlisted for Product Innovation of the Year is a fantastic recognition of the engineering work behind our Axial Flux EDU. We created the platform to solve a real industry challenge, reducing the time, cost and complexity of electrification for manufacturers of all sizes.

“Our team focused on delivering an integrated, validated solution that helps OEMs move faster from concept to production while improving performance and efficiency. It’s rewarding to see that innovation recognized within such a strong North East manufacturing community.”

The modular EDU platform delivers 53% higher torque density while reducing size by 58% and weight by 37% compared to traditional radial flux motor systems. With scalable power outputs and shared cooling architecture, it provides a compact, high-performance solution suited to demanding environments.

The technology has already been proven in extreme conditions, powering the Turntide Sierra Echo-R in the King of the Hammers Desert Challenge, one of the world’s toughest off-road endurance races, where it completed more than 600 miles without issue.

Following the awards dinner, winners will automatically be shortlisted for the national Made in the UK Awards. The event is sponsored by Made Smarter and held in association with the Engineering & Manufacturing Network, with funds raised supporting Aphasia Support.
