Why Is Continuous Power Density Important?

This parameter assesses a system’s ability to deliver consistent power within a given volume.

Many factors may influence which axial flux (AF) motor an original equipment manufacturer may select for an electrification or hybrid configuration project. One of these is continuous power density.

The Importance of Continuous Power Density

Continuous power density is the ability of the motor to deliver constant power per liter (L) of the axial flux motor. This is a crucial parameter considered when designing compact and efficient systems because it affects the system’s:

  • Ability to dissipate heat
  • Capacity to achieve better efficiency
  • Size

Space constraint is usually present in applications like:

  • The traction of electric and hybrid vehicles, machines, and equipment
  • Ancillary operation in electric and hybrid commercial vehicles and construction and mining equipment
  • Energy recuperation in electric and hybrid powertrains

The Comparison

The infographic below compares the power density of an ideal axial flux motor with three other competitor motors. The ideal motor provides the highest power density of all the brands.
