The marine industry is undergoing a transformation, driven by the demand for sustainable, high-performance propulsion systems, and axial flux motor innovation is leading the future of marine propulsion. At METSTRADE 2025, the spotlight was on the new FNM42HPE hybrid engine with the Blue Hybrid System (BHS) 120-kilowatt (kW) engine—a breakthrough setting a new benchmark for marine hybridization and electrification.

Engineering Excellence Meets Next-Gen Electric Power

Developed through an international partnership, the FNM Hybrid division of CMD S.p.A. and a leading UK-based electric motor innovator have combined their strengths to deliver a system that blends power, efficiency, and evolutionary technology. At the heart of this solution is the integration of the FNM42HP marine engine with the BHS and a next-generation axial flux motor.

This motor stands out for its exceptional power-to-weight ratio, exceeding 5.1 kW per kilogram (kg) and 20.5 Newton meters per kg at 360 volts direct current (VDC) and delivering smooth, quiet, and highly efficient operation even in compact installations. The AF430S model was selected for its high performance in limited spaces, low cogging torque, and compatibility with voltages up to 850 VDC, making it ideal for demanding marine conditions.

The hybrid engine drew attention from attendees.

Triple Propulsion Modes for Maximum Flexibility

The FNM42HPE BHS 120 kW system offers three propulsion modes: thermal, electric, and hybrid. In electric mode, it delivers peak power up to 310 kW (421 horsepower), enabling silent, zero-emission navigation, which is especially valuable in protected marine areas and inland waterways. Hybrid mode optimizes fuel consumption and emissions, while the thermal mode ensures robust performance when needed.

The BHS is a fully integrated system, managing all propulsion modes using a single control unit. Its main components—axial flux motor, control electronics, and battery pack—allow for automatic battery recharging and efficient operation across all modes.

Voices from the Partnership

The collaboration between CMD/FNM and Turntide is more than a technical achievement; it’s a testament to shared vision and expertise. As Michael Hart, business development manager, Turntide stated, “We are delighted to partner with FNM on this project. The collaboration shows one of the many ways that axial flux motors can power anything that moves, and we are proud to see the new next-generation axial flux motor succeed on the FNM42HPE hybrid engine.”

Giorgio Negri, sales manager, at CMD/FNM, added, “The partnership with the team is a prime example of how shared know-how and vision can translate into a tangible achievement in innovation and sustainability, marking an important step forward in the future of hybrid marine propulsion.”

Axial Flux: From Niche to Mainstream

Recent communications within the electrification community highlight how axial flux motors are moving from niche applications to mainstream adoption. Their modular, stackable design and peak efficiencies exceeding 96% make them ideal for space-constrained, high-performance marine and vehicle systems.

The METSTRADE debut of the FNM42HPE BHS 120-kW hybrid engine is more than a product launch—it’s a signal that the marine industry is ready to embrace the next wave of electrification. By merging mechanical expertise with advanced electric motor technology, this partnership is charting a course toward quieter, cleaner, and more efficient marine propulsion.
