Bespoke Inverter: Premium Automotive Manufacturer Succeeds with Tailored Technology

A world-class premium automotive manufacturer sought a bespoke inverter for a new hybrid vehicle. The team needed power electronic solutions to provide the following for their latestĀ premium hybrid vehicle:

  • Motor control
  • Voltage conversion
  • Power distribution

The company turned to a provider of motors, power electronics and batteries to help find the ideal component.Ā 

Bespoke Inverter Technical Challenge

The premium hybrid vehicle needed bespoke technical solutionsĀ to support an integrated power unit (IPU)—which is a three-in-one solution that includes an on-board charger, a direct current (DC)-to-DC voltage converter, and a power distribution unit—and a motor control unit (MCU). The MCU must meet the increased power demands to operate the speed, torque, and direction of the new vehicle’s motor whilst optimising the limited space claim given.

Technology Solution

The component manufacturer’s technical staff, consisting of software and hardware engineering support, developed a premium automotive bespoke inverter/controller design that exceeded the vehicles full specifications. The motor controller delivered excellent power density as required. Each vehicle required two of the bespoke technology solutions.

ResultsĀ 

The partnership was successful in all areas. The component manufacturer continues to supply the power electronics (bespoke inverter) for the vehicle and is actively developing further improved power electronics for future developments.
