COP28 honors Turntide with Energy Transition Changemaker Award

Every year, world leaders come together to address the climate crisis at the COP summit, one of the most pivotal events for activists, scientists, business leaders, and government officials to further conversations and international policymaking efforts. And this year, we’re thrilled to announce that Turntide won an Energy Transition Changemaker Award from the COP28 UAE Presidency in the Energy Efficiency category, an incredible acknowledgment of our impact on global decarbonization efforts.

We’re particularly proud of our project with Canadian Tire, which earned the recognition and highlights the impact of HVAC motor retrofits and our Smart Motor System on the built environment. Reducing energy waste in this sector really matters, as buildings account for 40% of global energy consumption. In commercial buildings, 40% of energy is consumed by HVAC systems, which is why we’ve focused on innovation in this space.

Our award-winning entry exemplifies the impact of the Smart Motor System. Canadian Tire chose Turntide as a partner in realizing its broader sustainability goals, centered on cutting carbon emissions by 40% by 2030. Turntide offered a powerful solution to help them achieve this: The physics, control, and intelligence of the Smart Motor System meant Canadian Tire could optimize energy efficiency in their stores with a simple, drop-in energy conservation measure for their rooftop units (RTUs).

The pilot kicked off in 2019, starting with a retrofit of one store location in Scarborough, ON. The energy savings at that location, along with the streamlined technology and expertise Turntide brought to the table, led Canadian Tire to grow the retrofit program and deliver the impressive results that led to the COP28 award. Turntide partnered with a network of local installation partners to retrofit 321 Canadian Tire retail locations, which led to 67% average energy savings and a reduction of more than 2,741 tons of carbon dioxide — the equivalent of saving 280,000 gallons of gas.

This award not only recognizes the incredible results for Canadian Tire but also showcases the scalability of our solution for a range of built environments. We’re grateful for such a prestigious acknowledgment, and we find deep inspiration and momentum to continue bringing sustainable solutions to the world.
