Mark Lord - Turntide Technologies

Returning to Make a Difference

I’m the Director of Program Management at Turntide Technologies. Previously, I worked for Sevcon and BorgWarner (later acquired by Turntide), where I gained valuable experience in program management and automotive new product development. In 2018,  I  left to manage remote teams developing mechanical drivetrain components (parking brakes, transfer cases etc…) for large OEMs including Jaguar, Land Rover, BMW, and Audi.  Whilst my time in the automotive industry allowed me to grow develop, and work with teams across the globe, I found myself craving a new challenge and a change in work dynamics.

The opportunity at Turntide to lead a team, help integrate three previously separate organisations and making a real difference to improving how projects are run and managed was really appealing to me.

In 2022, an opportunity arose at Turntide to lead the Program Management Team in the Transport Business Unit. Intrigued by what Turntide was accomplishing in the UK and its recent acquisitions, I was drawn to the company’s potential in an emerging market. I was also eager to return to a work environment that prioritized regular face-to-face interactions, as I had spent four years working remotely from my teams. Moreover, working in a large multinational corporation had limited my professional growth and offered little opportunity for progression beyond repetitive program cycles.

The chance to lead a team, integrate three previously separate organizations, and spearhead improvements in project management at Turntide excited me immensely. I saw this as an opportunity to make a tangible difference and contribute to the development of world-class and innovative products. Additionally, I was motivated by the prospect of standardizing processes across sites, aligning them with industry standards and best practices set by the Association of Project Management. Implementing project governance frameworks and supporting the engineering team in resource management were other responsibilities I eagerly embraced. Collaborating with the Product and Sales teams to scope out new projects and integrate them into the active project list was equally appealing.

My decision to join Turntide was driven by a combination of factors, including the company’s exciting trajectory, the opportunity to lead and make a difference, and the desire for a more collaborative work environment. Since joining the company, I have experienced significant professional growth. From initially leading the Program Management team, I have advanced to the role of Director of the Program Management function in Transport.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my time at Turntide has been the expansion of my knowledge beyond the automotive industry, working with different markets (e.g. rail and construction) and products (e.g. motors, batteries and power electronics). Additionally, the agile and dynamic environment of a startup has heightened my adaptability and ability to navigate challenges compared to my previous experience in a large multinational corporation focused on customer-specific products.

Overall, my journey at Turntide has been one of growth, leadership, and the pursuit of innovation. I am grateful for the opportunities I have had thus far and look forward to continuing to contribute to the success of Turntide Technologies.
